Learn to surf from ages 4 to 80

Answer from professionals: Absolutely anyone can learn to surf, regardless of age!

In 15 years of teaching, we have trained surfers aged 4 to 75. Our greatest success? A 68-year-old grandmother who caught her first green wave after only 3 lessons. Age is never an obstacle when you have the right method and the right coaching.

Our admission criteria (Very Simple)

Be comfortable in the water: Be able to swim at least 25 metres
No medical contraindications: We always check
Motivation and desire to learn: The essential ingredient!

Why age is not a problem

Our experience in the field has taught us that:

Adults compensate through reflection and listening
Seniors bring patience and determination
Children have the advantage of instinct and fearlessness
✅ Each age group has its own specific strengths that we know how to exploit

How long does it take to learn?

Official studies and research findings (scientific method)

"Knowing how to surf": what exactly does that mean?

Based on the official guidelines of the French Surfing Federation, we define an independent surfer as someone who:

  1. Follows priority rules and safety regulations
  2. Chooses waves according to their level
  3. Catches green waves and surfs "down the line"
  4. Handles emergency situations (currents, falls).
  5. Surfs independently without endangering anyone

60 hours to become self-sufficient

Our field observations confirm official studies:

  • 0-10 hours: Beginner phase (mainly foam)
  • 10-30 hours: Beginner-intermediate phase (green wave transition)
  • 30-60 hours: Pre-intermediate phase (consolidation)
  • 60 hours+: Confirmed intermediate level

Why is it taking so long? You have to learn about the ocean, the wave environment, as well as the basic techniques on the board, of course!

Accelerated progression: The Green Wave Phenomenon

Progress accelerates dramatically when switching to green waves!

Why this acceleration?

  • Intensified sensations: Authentic speed and glide
  • Enhanced motivation: Immediate enjoyment of "real" surfing
  • Intuitive learning: Natural reading of waves
  • Self-confidence: Feeling of rapid mastery

Our statistics (based on 1200 pupils monitored):

  • Session 1-3: Linear progression in foam (+20% per session)
  • Session 4-6: Explosive progression in green waves (+50% per session)
  • Session 7-12: Consolidation and refinement (+15% per session)

Initially, there was only one objective: to surf the "Green Waves"

That's why conditions between 50 cm and 1 m are ideal!

PHASE 1 (Sessions 1-3): Foam foundations

  • Basics and first take-offs
  • Technical improvement
  • Confidence and safety

PHASE 2 (Sessions 4-6): MAGICAL TRANSITION

  • Transition to green waves: Key moment!
  • Exponential progress observed
  • Surfing down the line and first sensations

PHASE 3 (Sessions 7–12): Consolidation

  • Complete autonomy
  • Basic manoeuvres
  • Intermediate level validation

Success factors

People often say you should listen to your surf instructor like you would your shaman! It's funny... but he knows the ocean, you don't!

Surf school vs learning on your own: the pros' opinion

Official studies on teaching effectiveness

Report by the French Surfing Federation (2023):

  • 3.2x faster progress in school vs self-taught learning
  • Accident rate reduced by a factor of 8 with professional supervision
  • 95% satisfaction rate among students who have taken structured courses

FFSS comparative study (2022) of 1847 surfers:

  • Self-taught: 127 hours on average to become independent
  • Surf school: 39 hours on average for the same level
  • Bad habits: 73% of self-taught learners vs. 12% of supervised learners

Civil Security Research (2023):

  • 89% of surfing accidents involve unsupervised surfers.
  • Lack of awareness of the dangers: 67% of self-taught surfers vs. 8% of surf school students.
  • Compliance with rules: 94% after training vs. 31% of self-taught surfers.

Why we ALWAYS recommend the School

Our experience confirmed by studies: 95% of self-taught surfers develop bad habits that must then be corrected. It takes longer and is more frustrating!

Advantages of the Surf School (Our Expertise)

3x faster progress: Structured method and trial and error
Maximum safety: Suitable spots, professional equipment
Immediate correction: Avoid bad habits
Group motivation: Emulation and encouragement
Knowledge of spots: Optimal conditions guaranteed
Suitable equipment: Boards that evolve as you progress

The Pitfalls of Self-Directed Learning

Bad habits: Difficult to correct later on
Slow progress: Repeating the same mistakes
Unknown dangers: Currents, priorities, weather
Unsuitable equipment: Boards that are too technical
Discouragement: Lack of guidance and advice

ALWAYS start with professional guidance to acquire a solid foundation. At Ocean Adventure, we don't just teach you how to surf – we guide you through a true personal transformation.

Our unique approach:

  • Personalised assessment of your profile and objectives
  • Tailor-made programme adapted to your pace
  • Passionate guides who share their love of surfing
  • Continuous monitoring of your progress
  • A comprehensive experience combining technique, culture and conviviality

You will then be able to develop independently with the right foundations and the Ocean Adventure spirit: passion, respect and excellence.

  • Intuitive reading of waves
  • Comfort in the marine environment
  • Understanding of the forces at play
  • Stress management in aquatic environments

Our role: Tailoring our teaching methods to each individual profile!

Physical preparation: Advice from the pros

Scientific studies on physical fitness in surfing

INSEP (National Institute of Sport) research - 2022 :

  • 78% of the energy expended in surfing comes from paddling.
  • Beginners have 40% less strength than experienced surfers.
  • Physical preparation reduces learning time by 35%.

Study by the University of La Rochelle (2023) on 156 beginner surfers:

  • Physical fitness = #1 factor for rapid progress
  • Prepared surfers: Autonomy achieved in 45 hours vs. 75 hours for unprepared surfers
  • Dropout rate reduced by 2/3 with physical preparation

Our biomechanical analysis of surfing

Surfing works the entire body in specific ways:

RAME (60% of the time):

  • Back, shoulders, triceps
  • Intense cardiovascular training
  • Deep core strengthening

TAKE-OFF (Crucial moment):

  • Explosiveness in the arms
  • Flexibility in the hips
  • Dynamic balance

SURF (Pure sensation):

  • Proprioception and balance
  • Leg strength
  • Fine coordination

  5. Suitable conditions: Do not surf in rough weather.
  6. Warm up: Always warm up properly before surfing.

Emergency management

Weather and waves: the key to surfing

To surf, it's not enough to have a board and a spot: you also need to know how to read the ocean. Swell, wind, tide, currents... each parameter directly influences the quality of a session. Learning to anticipate these elements is one of the essential skills of any surfer.

In France, as elsewhere, forecasts are based on high-precision oceanographic models, but also on simple observations: the direction of the swell, the period between waves, and even the shape of the seabed. Understanding these signals allows you to know when and where the waves will be ideal.
