Why aren’t ultra-party-oriented surf camps necessarily the best option anymore?

Surfing Break in the Landes: Reconnecting Body and Mind
When you think of surfing in France, one name often springs to mind: Hossegor. This European surfing capital is world-renowned for its powerful waves, perfect tubes and top-level international competitions.
However, whilst Hossegor is a real paradise for professional surfers, is it really the ideal place to learn and improve if you’re a beginner or an intermediate surfer?
The answer is more nuanced than it seems. The key to making rapid progress does not necessarily lie in the fame of the spot, but in how well it suits your ability. Indeed, tackling the most famous waves during the peak season can turn out to be a more stressful than rewarding experience.
At Surf Camp Hossegor: Yoga & Nature, we have explored every corner of the Landes coast to offer you a setting that truly enhances your learning experience.

What you need to know about the top surf spots in Hossegor and Capbreton
In the height of summer, the ocean attracts many enthusiasts, and plenty of budding surfers instinctively head for the most famous beaches, hoping to find the best conditions there. However, this strategy has its pitfalls.
Take, for example, the southern beach at Hossegor or the well-known Santocha spot at Capbreton. Whilst these spots are magnificent, they present several major challenges for a surfer who is still developing their skills. The density of surfers there is very high, which makes managing right of way and avoiding collisions particularly demanding.
This overcrowding can quickly turn your session into a struggle for survival rather than a time for enjoyment and learning.
What’s more, being surrounded by experienced surfers can create significant psychological pressure, sometimes leading you to make hasty decisions that hinder your progress.
Finally, the wave conditions at these spots are often complex. Depending on the tides, you may encounter fast, hollow waves that require an explosive take-off – a technique that’s difficult for beginners to master.
You’ve no doubt already felt that ‘spending your session slaloming between other surfers isn’t surfing, it’s survival’.
The secret to making progress: stepping back from the hustle and bustle
To really make progress, it’s essential to get away from the hustle and bustle and crowds of the main surf spots. That’s why we’ve chosen to set up our Surf Villa in Seignosse, just a 15-minute cycle from the centre of Hossegor. This change of scenery makes all the difference to your surfing experience.
The Seignosse coastline stretches for several kilometres of unspoilt beaches, bordered by a majestic pine forest. This vast, unspoilt natural setting keeps the crowds at bay and offers a peaceful environment that’s ideal for learning. It’s here that we’ve discovered the perfect spot – a real gem for surfers looking to improve their skills.
Casernes Beach: our favourite playground
Of all the beaches in Seignosse, Casernes Beach particularly catches our eye. Situated to the north of the town, it feels like a remote corner of the world that can be reached after a pleasant stroll through the pine forest. Its main attraction is, above all, the layout of its seabed.
Why Casernes Beach is ideal for improving your skills
---
Gentle sandbanks: the waves here are more gradual and less hollow than those at Hossegor, making it easier to learn.
Versatility: this spot catches the swell well and works at almost all tides, offering much-needed consistency.
Space: a vast beach where you can find your own spot without disturbing the other surfers.
Safety: soft, even foam padding near the edge so that beginners can practise with confidence.
At Les Casernes beach, you can take your time. Time to position your hands just right, to gaze out to sea, and to get your take-off just right without being thrown off balance by the speed of the wave. The gentle nature of the ocean provides the ideal setting for building solid technical foundations that will serve you well for years to come.
The importance of an environment suited to your progress
By choosing Surf & Yoga Hossegor, you’re choosing much more than just a surf school. You’re embracing a genuine learning philosophy that respects your pace and your ability. We refuse to throw you into the fray of overcrowded spots. We guide you to places where the waves work in your favour, where they help you improve.
“The best wave for you isn’t the biggest one; it’s the one you can read, understand and ride all the way to the end.”
Whether you’re chasing your very first wave or looking to refine your manoeuvres, Casernes Beach offers you the space, tranquillity and conditions you need. Join us in the Landes to discover this secret spot and really kick-start your progress as a surfer.
