Travel options in Sri Lanka: comfort, adventure or total immersion?
🛺 Tuk-tuks: the local rollercoaster
The tuk-tuk, that little backfiring scooter that gives every journey a taste of adventure. You can't come to Sri Lanka without at least trying it! It's perfect for short journeys (and thrills). The drivers are pros at daring driving. Fares can be negotiated before you get in, and it's much more affordable than a taxi, but for longer journeys, be sure to have your back and your sense of humour ready!
🚌 Local buses: for the adventurous
Feeling like an adventurer? The local buses are an experience in themselves. No air conditioning, but loud Sri Lankan music, flashy decorations and sometimes extra passengers (chickens, sacks of rice, etc.). It's extremely cheap, but not for the faint-hearted. Ideal for short distances if you want total immersion!
🚖 Taxis: the "chillax comfort" version
The taxi is your best friend! Your driver slaloms (gently) between the tuk-tuks and multicoloured buses to take you to your destination. For a journey of around 3 hours, such as from Colombo airport to the south coast, expect to pay between 70 and 80 euros. It's a bit like a tropical version of a VIP Uber. Always negotiate the fare before you leave, or use local apps like PickMe or Uber to avoid surprises.
