Theoretical surfing lesson: Understanding waves to surf them better
Would you like to learn to surf in Hossegor or significantly improve your surfing skills? There are two options available to you: take one-off lessons at a local surf school, or immerse yourself fully by signing up for a multi-day surf camp.
Both approaches have their own advantages, but they do not produce the same results.
Before you make your choice, here are the key points you need to know to make effective progress.

The traditional surf school: accessible but offers limited scope for improvement
Lessons by the hour or by the day at a surf school are the simplest and most flexible option. This allows you to try out surfing with no commitment, enjoy a few hours whilst on holiday, and leave with the basics to carry on on your own. It’s an excellent introduction to surfing, enabling you to quickly get a feel for riding the waves.
However, this approach reveals its limitations as soon as you really want to improve your technique and your understanding of surfing. Indeed, the very structure of one-off lessons does not encourage the long-term retention of skills or continuous progress.
The first major obstacle is the lack of continuity. A two-hour class, even if very well supervised, is not enough to embed the movements in your muscle memory. You learn a new movement, but once you get home, it’s common to have forgotten the basics by the very next day. This difficulty is explained by neuroscience, which shows that regular repetition is essential for consolidating motor skills[1].
Secondly, the large class sizes pose a problem. Most schools have between 10 and 15 pupils per instructor, which significantly reduces the amount of time available for individual coaching. Personalised feedback is often superficial, and you do not receive support tailored to your specific needs.
Finally, there is virtually no educational support. Each lesson starts from scratch, without taking into account your recurring mistakes, areas where you’re struggling or the progress you’ve made. It is therefore difficult to draw up a coherent learning plan that will help you make rapid progress.
“Taking surfing lessons by the hour is like learning a foreign language with just one two-hour lesson a week. You do make progress, but very slowly.”
The surf camp: a total immersion experience for rapid progress
The surf camp offers a completely different approach, based on total immersion in surfing over several days, often a week. This duration is ideal for your body and mind to absorb new skills in a lasting way, thanks to a strong educational focus and personalised coaching.
At our Surf & Yoga Hossegor surf camp, the instructor works with you every day and closely monitors your progress. They are aware of your recurring mistakes, your concerns and your strengths, and continually adapts the exercises to suit your progress. This approach is in line with the principles of sports physiology, which emphasises the importance of gradual and personalised adaptation to optimise performance[2].
| Criterion | Traditional surf school | Hossegor Surf & Yoga Surf Camp |
|---|---|---|
| Duration | 1 to 2 hours per lesson | 5 lessons spread over 7 days of immersion |
| Group size | 10 to 15 pupils | 5 to 8 pupils per instructor |
| Educational support | None (one-off classes) | Ongoing, tailored to your profile |
| Teaching resources | For use in water only | Videos, theory, yoga, nutrition |
| Recovery | Not covered | Yoga, healthy meals, natural surroundings |
As well as technical instruction, the surf camp incorporates complementary methods such as video analysis of your movements, yoga sessions to improve your flexibility and balance, and a healthy diet to aid your recovery. This means you’ll be training in a well-rounded environment, optimised for your progress.
Your living environment: a key factor in your learning
Beyond the lessons themselves, the surf camp offers you a unique living environment that plays a key role in your progress. You are immersed in surf culture 24 hours a day, which provides a constant, informal stimulus for your learning. Discussions after sessions, group video debriefings and the camaraderie between surfers of different levels enrich your experience and boost your motivation.
This complete immersion, combined with an unspoilt natural setting – the forests of the Landes and fine sandy beaches – and complementary activities such as morning yoga, promotes a beneficial mind-body balance. Research in neuroscience highlights that this type of holistic environment improves concentration, reduces stress and facilitates motor learning[3].
“In just one week at a well-organised surf camp, you often make as much progress as you would in a whole season of one-off lessons.”
If your aim is to take your surfing to the next level, gain a deeper understanding of the ocean and build a solid foundation, the answer is clear. Join us at Surf & Yoga Hossegor to experience this transformative immersion that will turn you into a true surfer, ready to tackle the waves with confidence and enjoyment.
