Learn to surf in the Canaries: which island to choose?
Which kite for which wind?
Hello everyone! I’m Nicolas Mercadieu, the founder of Ocean Adventure. I’m often asked why I chose Corralejo in the Canaries for surfing. In another video, we’ve already discussed the differences between the islands. But today I’m going to focus on Corralejo, which lies to the north of Fuerteventura.
So why Corralejo? Firstly, this area is particularly suited to beginners and intermediate to advanced surfers. It offers three different atmospheres depending on the water sports you practise: for kitesurfing, you have the Costa Calma and Corralejo, and for surfing, there are mainly Corralejo and Cotillo.
Now, let’s talk about the location. Corralejo is fairly central. It’s close to the interior of the island, so you can travel between different spots. You can get to the left in 15-20 minutes and to Corralejo in about 20 minutes as well. The great thing about Corralejo is that you can be travelling between 30 and 45 minutes to go surfing, which offers a wide variety of conditions and scenery. For beginners, the best areas are in the middle of the natural park, which is absolutely stunning with its white, orange and black sand beaches.
The atmosphere in Corralejo is unique. It’s a village unaffected by mass tourism. You’ll meet people of all nationalities. For those looking for a more cultural experience, there are yoga classes and other activities to do besides surfing. Families will love taking a ferry to the island of Lobos, especially if you have young children. The waters there are shallow, making it a safe place for little ones.
If you’re a keen scuba diver, it’s also the ideal place for a first dive. The seabed is incredible and very accessible, even for beginners.
Now, in terms of accommodation, we have two surf camps, one on the beach and the other in an architect-designed house. They’re both located at a reasonable distance from the town centre and the nature reserves. The great thing is that you can choose to immerse yourself in the hustle and bustle of the city or enjoy the solitude of the dunes.
In conclusion, Corralejo has a lot to offer: ideal surfing conditions for all levels, a wide variety of activities for all the family, and a cultural and international atmosphere. I hope I’ve answered your questions about why you should choose Corralejo for your next surf trip. Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any further questions. Have a good day and see you soon! Bye for now.
