Hossegor’s secret surf spots
Beaches renowned worldwide not only for the quality of their waves, of course, but also for the purity of the water and their vast stretches of sand and wild dunes. It is the waves that have made the reputation of this flagship resort in the Landes department. The world’s best surfers come here every year. Hossegor’s clear advantage is its wave potential for surfing, much like a ski resort. Indeed, just as with the difficulty rating system for mountain slopes, and depending on the spots (key locations for surfing), we have waves suitable for both beginners and experienced surfers.
The main surf spots
1. The spot in the south, ideal for learning to surf
Regarded as a beginner’s spot, its exposure to the summer swell and its sandbanks make it the perfect place to start. Easily accessible at low tide, novice surfers can quickly learn the basics, with the chance to ride proper waves (waves that haven’t yet broken) very soon. The Sud spot is also a fallback spot when the swell is big. It is rare not to be able to surf at the Sud.
2. The power station’s spotlight: the wave with two faces.
This spot takes its name from the central beach, at the foot of the Place des Landais in Hossegor. Depending on the year, there may be a sandbank that forms at both low and high tide. The wave can then be either very accessible, even for surfing beginners, or become quite technical with some nice barrels. It’s an ideal spot for learning to surf independently.
3. The North Spot, for shippers
This is a legendary wave located off the coast of the central beach. The wave really comes into its own when the swell exceeds two metres. The swell crashes against the sandbank, which is unusual in that it remains in the same position from one winter to the next.
4. The Gravière spot, an iconic surfing spot in Europe
This spot, north of the power station, starts at the exposed bunker and stretches 500 metres to the north. It is a beach with its own car park and entrance. La Gravière takes its name from the gravel at the foot of a very compact sandbank.
The wave at La Gravière is world-renowned and the ideal spot for international competitions. It is a powerful, technical tube wave. A magazine-worthy wave. To surf La Gravière, you need to have a solid grounding in surfing.
Secret surf spots
1. Secrets of the North and the Forest
- Le Spot X: A few kilometres to the north, this sandbank offers fast, powerful waves. It’s the perfect haven for experts seeking peace and quiet and long, tubular rides.
- Le Spot des Pins: Accessible only on foot or by bike, this gem nestled on the edge of the forest guarantees a truly immersive experience. Its hollow, wild waves reward those with the most patience.
2. Between Dunes and Currents
- La Chêneraie: Hidden behind the dunes, this spot – a favourite with the locals – really comes alive when the swell is big. Expect some physical, fast-paced and memorable sessions.
- Le Secret de la Baïne: Close to the centre but unpredictable, it plays with the currents to offer technical and ever-changing sections. A thorough knowledge of the marine environment is essential here.
- La Pointe des Ancres: At the southern tip, this consistent spot offers solitude and quality waves. A short walk is all it takes to get away from it all and focus on what matters: surfing.
The Ethics of the “Secret Spot”
The magic of these places lies in their preservation. To ensure these sanctuaries endure:
- Discretion: Avoid overcrowding and respect the right of way in the water.
- Environmental responsibility: Leave no trace of your visit in the dunes or the forest.
- Respect: Observe the codes of the local community that looks after these waves.
Surfing a secret spot in Hossegor is a privilege that calls for humility and passion. Have a great session!

The marshy meadows, contrasting with the Landes forest, form a rare and protected ecosystem. Partly designated as a Sensitive Natural Area, the Barthes are home to a rich variety of flora and fauna. Once used for cattle farming, they ceased to be used for agricultural purposes in the 1970s. Today, the local council and the Hunting Federation are responsible for their upkeep. A 3,7 km trail, accessible in fine weather, allows visitors to explore this site, which is flooded for a few days each year.

The forest

The Hossegor Forest, with its mix of pines, oaks and arbutus trees, combines majesty with a welcoming atmosphere. The town has successfully preserved this natural heritage by harmoniously integrating urban development. Thanks to a sustainable management programme, it promotes the forest whilst ensuring its conservation and sustainable use, notably through a nature trail.
