When you think of surfing in France, one name often springs to mind: Hossegor. Renowned as the ‘European surfing capital’, this town attracts thousands of enthusiasts every year, from professionals in search of the perfect tubes to beginners keen to try their hand at surfing.
Yet, just a few kilometres to the north, Seignosse offers a completely different experience – one that is more authentic and natural.
So, which should you choose: Seignosse or Hossegor? Although both these towns are situated on the Atlantic coast, the atmosphere, the quality of the lessons and the connection with nature are vastly different. At Surf & Yoga Camp Seignosse, we have deliberately chosen to set up our Surf Villa in the heart of the Landes forest, in Seignosse. This geographical choice lies at the heart of our teaching approach, and we’d like to explain why.

Hossegor: excitement and top-class performance
Hossegor is a dynamic and lively town, home to a veritable mecca for surfers. Specialist shops, lively bars, trendy restaurants and villas in the Basque-Landes style combine to create the ideal setting for immersing yourself in the surf lifestyle. It is an unmissable destination for anyone wishing to experience the heartbeat of surf culture.
When it comes to surfing, Hossegor is famous for its powerful waves, particularly at spots such as La Gravière and La Nord, where top-level international competitions are regularly held[1]. However, this reputation comes with its own specific challenges for you, whether you’re an amateur or a beginner surfer.
Firstly, overcrowding in the summer can quickly become a problem. Spots right in the town centre, such as Plage Sud or La Centrale, are often packed. As a result, learning in these conditions can be stressful, with less time to practise due to the high number of people. Secondly, the power of the waves at Hossegor – fuelled by sandbanks that generate hollow, fast-breaking waves – is a real paradise for experts but can be intimidating, or even dangerous, for those looking to master the basics and progress with confidence.
“Hossegor is a brilliant place to watch the pros surf. But if you want to learn and improve, you need to venture away from the centre.”
Seignosse: space, nature and progress
Just a 15-minute cycle north of Hossegor, Seignosse reveals a very different side to itself. Here, urban development gives way to unspoilt nature. This town is home to the largest pine forest in the Landes region on the south coast, and its beaches stretch for over six kilometres, bordered by unspoilt dunes that provide an idyllic and peaceful setting[2].
It was precisely this tranquillity, this sense of space and this closeness to nature that convinced us to set up our camp here. Far from the hustle and bustle, Seignosse offers the ideal conditions for a ‘Mind & Body’ retreat, where you can focus entirely on your progress and your wellbeing.
The strategic choice of Casernes Beach
Of all the beaches in Seignosse – such as Les Estagnots, Les Bourdaines and Le Penon – we’ve chosen to set up camp on Casernes Beach, the northernmost and wildest of them all. This spot is ideal for learning to surf:
| Why we prefer Les Casernes in Hossegor | The impact on your surfing |
|---|---|
| Fewer visitors | You’ll have plenty of space to make mistakes without the risk of colliding with other surfers. |
| Softer sandbanks | The waves are less hollow and more manageable, giving you more time to get up and find your balance. |
| Natural immersion | The tranquillity of the beach reduces stress and helps you concentrate – two essential factors for making effective progress. |
At this spot, our instructors can supervise small groups of 5 to 8 people with complete peace of mind. The ocean here is gentler, which speeds up your learning whilst boosting your self-confidence. This natural setting also allows you to benefit from the positive effects of the environment on your mental and physical wellbeing, as demonstrated by several studies in neuroscience and sports physiology[3].
The best of both worlds
By choosing Seignosse, we’re not turning our backs on Hossegor. On the contrary, our location offers you the best of both worlds. Our Surf Villa, nestled in the tranquillity of the Landes forest, guarantees you peaceful and restful nights – essential for recharging your batteries after intense days by the water.
But when you’re in the mood for a bit of socialising and a lively atmosphere, Hossegor is just a bike ride away. Our guests love to hop on our bikes to potter around the local market, have a drink at Les Halles or enjoy a spot of shopping in the Pédebert business park, famous for its outlet stores featuring major surf brands.
“Seignosse for surfing, sleeping and recharging your batteries. Hossegor for strolling and having fun.”
This duality is the strength of our concept. When you stay at Surf & Yoga Hossegor, you’ll benefit from a supportive teaching approach and the unspoilt natural surroundings of Seignosse, whilst enjoying the energy and vibrancy of Hossegor. You no longer have to choose between progress and enjoyment: you can experience both to the full.
