Enjoy the best beaches in Somo after your surf session
If you’re looking for something a little different, head to Loredo Beach, a natural extension of Somo, or explore Langre Beach, famous for its cliffs and unspoilt surroundings. Don’t miss El Puntal, a sand spit jutting out into Santander Bay, the perfect spot to unwind and take in the sea in all its natural beauty.
What is there to do in Somo when you’re not surfing? Activities for all travellers
Beyond surfing, Somo is a true paradise for nature lovers and hikers. One of the most spectacular routes is the one that runs along the cliffs of Langre, starting at the viewpoint on the island of Santa Marina and continuing on to Langre, with the option of extending the walk as far as Galizano. This trail offers stunning views of the Cantabrian coast, passing by unspoilt beaches and lush green meadows.
Somo and the surrounding area offer a wealth of activities to round off your experience at Latas Surf Camp. Whether you’re travelling alone, as a couple, with friends or with family, there’s something for everyone:
1. Hike along the Langre cliffs: from the Santa Marina viewpoint to Galizano
One of the most highly recommended routes starts at the viewpoint on the island of Santa Marina, a perfect spot for photographing the coastline and taking in views of the largest island in the Cantabrian Sea. From here, the path runs along the cliffs, passes by Los Tranquilos beach and reaches the impressive Langre beach, surrounded by cliffs over 20 metres high. If you wish, you can continue on to Galizano, where the Cucabrera cave and more beaches await you.
2. The Cucabrera Cave in Galizano, a hidden gem
Cucabrera Cave is one of those magical places known only to the most curious travellers. Located near Galizano Beach, it can be reached via a path that winds its way through both the coastline and the forest. From the cave, the views of the sea and the Picos de Europa are breathtaking. It is an ideal spot for a picnic, to relax and soak up the energy of the Cantabrian countryside.
3. A walk in the Pinar de Arna forest, near Somo
If you’re looking for a peaceful family activity, the Pinar de Arna is perfect. This pine forest is located next to Somo beach and is ideal for walking, running, doing yoga outdoors or simply enjoying the shade on the hottest days. It’s also linked to several coastal paths that will take you to discover unique coves and viewpoints.
4. Explore Galizano Beach and its natural surroundings
Less well-known than Somo or Langre, Galizano beach charms visitors with its natural beauty and peaceful atmosphere. You can reach it on foot from Langre or by bike, go for a swim, try your hand at bodyboarding, or simply relax on the sand. It is surrounded by meadows and small cliffs, perfect for exploring on foot.
5. E-bike tours: Loredo, Langre and Galizano
One of the best ways to explore the coast around Ribamontán al Mar is by e-bike. There are guided routes linking Somo to Loredo, Los Tranquilos, Langre and Galizano, passing through pine forests, meadows and along cliffs with sea views. This activity is suitable for all abilities.
6. Kayaking trips on the Somo Estuary and Santander Bay
Kayaking on the Somo estuary is a unique experience and highly recommended. You can hire kayaks at the jetty and paddle along the Cubás estuary, around Santander Bay or head towards El Puntal. It’s a safe, fun activity suitable for everyone.
7. Diving in Pedreña: explore the seabed of Cantabria
Just a few minutes from Somo, in Pedreña, lies one of Cantabria’s most renowned diving centres. They offer introductory dives, courses and excursions for all levels. Dive into the waters of the Cantabrian Sea and discover the rich marine life.
