Why small waves make for better surfers
Learning to surf is an exciting adventure, but it often comes with a significant psychological barrier: fear. You might feel apprehensive about big waves, currents, the stares of others, or even the fear of collisions at spots that are often overcrowded. These feelings are perfectly normal, but they can significantly slow down your progress if you don’t choose a suitable spot for your first few sessions.
At Surf & Yoga Camp Seignosse, we place managing this apprehension at the heart of our approach. That’s why we’ve carefully selected our daily playground: Casernes Beach in Seignosse. This unspoilt gem on the Landes coast is much more than just a beach; it’s a perfectly supportive and safe learning environment.

Space and tranquillity: the keys to reducing stress
One of the main causes of anxiety for a beginner is overcrowding at surf spots, often referred to as ‘the crowd’. At very busy spots such as Hossegor or Biarritz, you can sometimes feel as though you’re on a busy motorway, where you have to constantly manoeuvre your board whilst avoiding other surfers. This situation is mentally draining and can quickly become discouraging.
At Casernes Beach, the experience is completely different. Situated at the northern tip of Seignosse, it is the wildest and least developed beach in the area. You reach it after a pleasant walk through the pine forest and the dunes, which creates a sense of natural seclusion. This unspoilt setting acts as a natural filter against outside pressures.
“Learning to surf without the pressure of other people’s gazes and without the fear of colliding with others means treating yourself to the luxury of focusing entirely on yourself.”
On this vast beach, we can always set up our group of 5 to 8 people off to one side, on our own peak (the area where the wave breaks). This tranquillity is the foundation for learning without fear, allowing you to focus on your progress with complete confidence.
Gentle waves and sandbanks ideal for beginners
The shape and power of the waves depend largely on the bathymetry, that is, the underwater topography of the beach. Spots renowned amongst experienced surfers often feature steep sandbanks that generate hollow, fast-breaking waves, known as ‘tubes’. For a beginner, this type of wave is a real nightmare, as the wave ‘throws’ you about violently and leaves no room for error.
At Les Casernes, the sea is calmer. The sandbanks there are generally flat and wide, which softens the force of the breaking waves.
| The appeal of the waves at Les Casernes | The impact on your learning |
|---|---|
| Gradual surge | The wave rolls in slowly, giving you plenty of time to take off without rushing. |
| Beautiful patches of moss | The long stretches of white water allow you to practise standing up safely, close to the bank. |
| Adaptability to the tides | The spot is open for long periods, giving you the chance to choose the times when the waves are at their gentlest. |
It is this forgiving nature of the ocean that takes the fear out of it. You know that even if you fall, the wave won’t hurt you. So you can be bold, give it a go, fall over and start again with a sense of calm and a smile.
Local support to guide you every step of the way
A safe spot alone is not enough; you also need an experienced guide to accompany you. The ocean remains a wild natural environment, with its own rules, currents (particularly the ‘baïnes’) and unpredictable behaviour. This is where our premium teaching approach comes into its own.
Even before you set foot in the water, our theory lessons will help you understand how the beach works. You’ll learn to identify currents, spot the best spots for waves to break, and use the water’s movement to paddle without tiring yourself out. Understanding the ocean is the first step towards overcoming your fear of it.
“Fear stems from the unknown. By understanding how a wave works, you transform the ocean from a formidable foe into a manageable playground.”
Once in the water, our instructors stay by your side at all times. Our deliberately small groups mean your coach is always close by to reassure you, guide you onto the right wave and correct your posture in real time.
If you dream of surfing but are held back by fear, Casernes Beach is the perfect solution. Combined with our bespoke teaching methods and top-of-the-range equipment, it will offer you a unique surfing experience in complete safety.
