5 mistakes that are holding you back from improving at surfing (and how to avoid them)

Why aren’t ultra-party-oriented surf camps necessarily the best option anymore?
Do you think it takes months, or even years, to catch your first proper wave and experience the magic of riding the waves? Think again: learning to surf in just one week is entirely possible, provided you have the right environment and the right teaching methods. If you simply hire a board and set off on your own to tackle the Atlantic waves, your experience is likely to be as exhausting as it is discouraging.
At the Hossegor Yoga & Nature surf camp, we have developed a comprehensive teaching approach that accelerates your progress. Our method is not based on mindless repetition, but on intelligent repetition. Our week-long programme is carefully designed: from the small group size to the precise analysis of your movements, and the emphasis placed on your recovery, every detail is aimed at helping you take your technique to the next level, whatever your starting level.

Small-group supervision: a key tool
In many traditional surf schools, lessons can sometimes resemble large summer camps, where an instructor has to manage a dozen pupils scattered across the water. Under these conditions, personalised feedback is rare and often vague. However, learning to surf requires individualised attention, as each person faces different challenges: fear of the waves, incorrect hand positioning, or looking down rather than towards the horizon.
We have chosen to limit our groups to a maximum of 5 to 8 people per instructor. This ideal ratio enables our coaches to observe you at all times, provide personalised feedback and tailor their advice to your body type and learning pace.
“A good coach doesn’t just tell you what to do; they understand why you haven’t managed it yet.”
A holistic approach to teaching: from theory to video analysis
The Ocean Adventure method is based on a firm belief: progress doesn’t stop at practising in the water. An independent surfer is, above all, a surfer who understands their natural environment. That’s why we include in-depth theory lessons as part of our week-long course. You’ll learn to interpret weather charts, understand the role of the tides, how sandbanks form and the dynamics of currents – all essential elements for improving your safety and performance.
But our real strength is video analysis. Every session is filmed, and we then debrief together at the Surf Villa. This allows you to observe precisely your positioning on the board, the quality of your paddle and the timing of your take-off. This direct visualisation enables you to understand your mistakes instantly and to internalise the corrections much more quickly. Neuroscience also confirms that visual stimulation accelerates motor learning by doubling the retention rate of technical movements[1].
Top-of-the-range equipment, perfectly suited to your progress
Beginners often underestimate the importance of choosing the right equipment, even though it determines your comfort and success. Using a board that is too thin or too short often means spending long sessions swimming, whilst a low-quality wetsuit will restrict your movements and cause you to lose energy quickly due to the cold.
At Surf & Yoga Hossegor, we pride ourselves on providing you with premium equipment. You’ll be kitted out with brand-new 3.2 mm Rip Curl wetsuits, designed to offer optimal freedom of movement, and boards suited to your ability. The voluminous softboards guarantee stability and ease during your first take-offs, whilst the epoxy-foam hybrid boards help you learn your first manoeuvres with complete confidence.
The Surf & Yoga synergy: preparing and protecting your body
Surfing is a dynamic, asymmetrical sport that places intense strain on your shoulders, back and hips. To be able to complete five consecutive days of lessons without building up muscle tension, it is essential to prepare your body and aid its recovery.
This is where our functional yoga programme comes in. Every morning, you’ll take part in a gentle mobility session specially designed for surfers. This practice aims to improve your hip flexibility, shoulder mobility and breathing capacity – all essential for optimising your performance and minimising fatigue.
| The Purpose of Yoga | Direct benefits in surfing |
|---|---|
| Hip flexibility | Smooth and rapid take-off |
| Shoulder mobility | A more powerful and less tiring rowing experience |
| Deep breathing | Stress management and improved endurance underwater |
“Yoga doesn’t just make you more flexible; it makes your surfing more instinctive.”
Combined with personalised coaching, professional teaching resources and top-of-the-range equipment, the Ocean Adventure method promises you progress in just one week that often exceeds what others achieve in several months.
