Cultural visits: between Agadir and Essaouira
Imsouane, ideally situated between Essaouira and Agadir, two of Morocco’s historic cities, offers the perfect opportunity for enriching cultural visits. Approximately 1? hours away, taking the N1 road that winds along the coast, bordered by argan trees and the ocean, the journey itself becomes part of the adventure, recalling the words of Jack London: “it’s not the destination that counts, but the road travelled”.
Explore Essaouira, nicknamed “La Blanche”, and lose yourself in its charming alleyways. Discover the ramparts, the vibrant medina, the works of local artists and craftsmen, and the picturesque fishing port. This city, which has managed to preserve its authenticity away from mass tourism, is brimming with charm and culture.
Agadir, on the other hand, offers a modern contrast following its reconstruction after the 1960 earthquake. Be sure to visit its historic kasbah, accessible by cable car, a poignant vestige of the ancient city. Stroll through the recently renovated El Had souk, the largest in the country, where you can find a multitude of local goods, from carpets to jewellery and fresh fruit and vegetables.
The region is also renowned for its women’s argan farming cooperatives, a local economic mainstay, particularly for women. On the way to Imsouane, discover these cooperatives and learn more about the production of argan oil, used in cosmetics and cooking, particularly in the preparation of Amlou, a local delicacy made from argan oil, crushed almonds and honey.
For an authentic experience, visit the Tamri souk on Mondays. Known for its bananas, this small town comes alive with traders selling a variety of products. A visit to the Tamri souk is a real immersion in local culture.
