Do you dream of diving into authenticIndonesia, close to nature and the local people, far from mass tourism? Do you dream of islands with warm waters and white sandy beaches fringed by coconut palms?

Welcome to the Surf trip to Simeulue Island, Sumatra, Indonesia!

We are located on the edge of a small white sandy beach and a translucent river, surrounded by coconut palms, in a majestic natural environment. Our 4 Indonesian bungalows open directly onto our small 'private' beach.

The island is still very unspoilt and nature is omnipresent, so non-surfers can enjoy a breathtaking environment both on land and at sea. It is possible to snorkel with the turtles, go underwater hunting, fishing, walk in the forest towards the waterfalls etc...

Our bungalows

  1. All our bungalows are built in traditional materials to European standards of comfort,

  2. Our bungalows are made of local wood, a material suited to warm regions and the seaside. They are designed to allow good ventilation.

  3. They are designed to be well ventilated, and the fans are more than enough to keep you cool with the sea breeze.

Bar & Restaurant

Serving you well and cooking the food you want are important to us, and we're renowned for it all over the island! We offer a variety of dishes, mainly local, healthy and energetic for days of sport...
Lunches and dinners are a mix of Indonesian and Western cuisine. They will be prepared by Emi and Nayang, our expert Sumatran cooks.
We bake our own bread, make our own jams and introduce you to our coconut yoghurt made without a drop of animal milk.
As a Frenchman who loves French cuisine, I'd be delighted to cook for you from time to time: ceviche, burgers and spaghetti bolognaise ****entre autres.

Localisation

Our surf camp is located right on the beach in the middle of a coconut grove, in an idyllic environment, ideal for relaxation.

The island of Simeulue, also known as Simeuleu, is situated to the north-west of Sumatra, around 2 degrees north of the equator.

Activities

Surf

Surfing is obviously the main activity on Simeulue, with its many spots for all levels, from beachbreak to slab for barrel riders. However, this island has much more to offer, and the word surf-trip also means trip! There are magnificent beaches to discover, waterfalls, translucent waters teeming with fish and beautiful coral reefs, ideal for snorkelling, spearfishing and fishing, including deep-sea fishing.

Surf spots in Sumeulue

Reef break, point break, beach break

Dylan's

Located 15 minutes from the surf camp, this is a straight tube over 1.50m, winding around a coral point. Frontside if you miss the tube you can only blame yourself! It's similar to lagundry at Nias, but a little shorter. A super fun wave under two metres.

The peak

My favourite wave. Located 30 minutes away by motorbike. It's a left-right tubular peak, although the left is more regular. Two very hollow sections to negotiate below the lip at over 1m50... A paradise for goofy foot! The peak is a wave magnet.

The school

A hollow right walking by small swell unwinding on a reef close to the edge in front of a school. Located 10 minutes from Kita.

Alus alus left

A long point-break left with turns and several sections to "rip". An accessible wave for almost all levels.

One thong

Point break on the left winding into a magical bay. A long wall to express yourself... before a deeper section at the edge. An ultra consistent spot that is never flat. 500m from the camp as the crow flies.

Guccy's

A long point-break left with turns and several sections to "rip". An accessible wave for almost all levels.

Tea bags

Situated on the island of teupah, 1 hour by boat, this right turns violently on a point, emerging from very deep water and breaking in little water. Can hold waves over 3 metres. The meanest, fastest wave around, a perfect, photogenic barrel. Advanced only!

The bay of beachbreaks

My resort is located near a 5-kilometre-long bay dotted with virgin sandbanks. These banks can produce very hollow rights and lefts, ideal for bodyboarding in particular. They're ideal for a change from reefs and for sending out airs! There are plenty of other beachbreaks further north... the search is on!

It is MANDATORY. The island has a hospital, useful for first aid. There is also a larger hospital in Medan. However, a repatriation can quickly become very expensive.
7Do I need a passport and visa to visit Simeulue?
The visa costs 500,000 Indonesian rupiahs for a stay of less than 30 days. Note that to enter Indonesia the passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the date of return.
There are two ways of obtaining a visa.
- On entry to the country for a 30-day visa. 500,000 IDR or around €30.
- At the Indonesian embassy in France or through agencies such as action visas, for a 60-day visa, the cost is between €50 and €100, depending on the agency. Before you leave...
8Is it necessary to take treatment for malaria and dengue fever?
Malaria is not present on Simeulue. There is therefore no need to take anti-malaria medication. There is no preventive treatment against dengue fever, but it is very rare here. Prevention is the best solution. Bringing long clothes for the evening and early morning and mosquito repellent for tropical regions is the best solution. All rooms are equipped with mosquito nets.
9Is Islam the dominant religion? What are the constraints?
Here, as in most of Indonesia, Islam is the predominant religion, Bali being the exception. Bali is the largest Muslim country in the world in terms of population. Islam is practised there in a relatively assiduous way, even if it remains much more open than the image that the countries of the Middle East give us. Women are veiled or not by choice and they are not confined to their homes. It is obviously forbidden to drink alcohol in public, as in all Muslim countries. However, you can bring your own bottle (1L max per person) and enjoy bintangs and cocktails... Women are not allowed to wear bikinis everywhere. There are no restrictions on boat trips, on certain isolated beaches or within the resort grounds. To surf other spots, you'll need to cover your buttocks and shoulders. Women's boardshorts and a T-shirt are all you need.
10Is it possible to party at night in Simeulue?
Nightlife is not the island's strong point and a surftrip here is synonymous with... SURFTRIP! SURFTRIP!!! the (crazy) evenings in Sinabang can be summed up as karaoke accompanied by coffee or an Indonesian rock concert (once again, a change of scenery guaranteed). Bali is more recommended for hard-core party-goers...
11Can you smoke weed at Simeuleue?
Please note that ALL DRUG TRAFFICKING IS SUBJECT TO THE DEATH PENALTY IN INDONESIA. No drugs will be tolerated on the resort.
12How do I get to Simeuleue?
The surf camp is located 15/20 minutes from Sinabang airport.
To get there, you'll take a flight from Paris to Medan on Sumatra in Indonesia. You can book a flight from Medan to Simeulue on the travelok.com website
- Fares for flights from Paris to Medan
Tickets for flights from Paris to Medan and return can be found for around 800 euros. Qatar airways has just opened a direct Doha Medan route. It is therefore possible to fly to Medan with just two stopovers from many European cities.
- Fares for flights to Medan Simeulue
Flights to Medan Simeulue cost around €200 return. The cost of transporting the boards is IDR 500,000 per board, i.e. around 30 euros.
Note that the outward flight is at 8.50am. For the return flight I advise you not to take a connection from Medan before 4pm in case of a delay from Wing's air, they're getting better but it can still happen.
- That's 18 hours of travel and surfing on arrival
For information if the flights go well it's possible to leave Paris on Saturday lunchtime and surf on Sunday afternoon. In other words, an 18-hour journey without the time difference to surf with friends in Indonesia in warm water! It's much more convenient than for Nias or the Mentawai Islands, which are in the same area.
13Why choose Qatar airlines?
Qatar airways flights are the only ones to arrive directly in Medan. Otherwise you will have to go via Kuala Lumpur, Singapore or Jakarta. You will need to spend one night in Medan on the outward journey, as flights are early on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings. it is possible to make the return journey on the same day. A flight from Medan from 4 p.m. onwards is advisable to avoid any delays from Wings Air.
